Sudan Determined to Defeat RSF in Darfur

(MENAFN) Sudan has reaffirmed its determination to defeat the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the war-torn Darfur region, as the country’s brutal conflict continues to escalate.

“We renew our commitment to the martyrs to continue confronting and defeating the rebel militia (RSF) and foreign mercenaries until every inch of Darfur is liberated,” declared Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council.

His statement came during a visit Tuesday to Wad Al-Noora, a village in central Gezira state where the RSF allegedly carried out a mass killing in June 2024, according to media.

Burhan underscored the military’s resolve, stating the army would not stand down “until this rebellion and brutal aggression are eradicated.”

“My visit to the village fulfills a previous promise I made to the wounded in the area and is a duty owed to console the families of the martyrs,” he added.

On June 7, 2024, Sudan’s Foreign Ministry publicly accused the RSF of slaughtering 180 civilians in Wad Al-Noora. The paramilitary group has consistently denied involvement in attacks targeting civilians.

In March, the Sudanese army announced it had regained full control of Gezira state—nearly a year after it was seized by the RSF.

Fighting between the Sudanese military and the RSF has devastated the country since April 2023. The conflict has officially left over 20,000 people dead and displaced 14 million, according to the UN and local authorities. However, independent research conducted by U.S. universities estimates the death toll to be significantly higher—around 130,000 lives lost.
